he San Diego County Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation is spon- soring the sixth annual "Paddle for Clean Water" at the Ocean Beach Pier in San Diego, California. This popular paddle event is being held in conjunction with National Clean Water Day, on Saturday August 16, 1997.

Clean Water Day was established in 1993 by the Clean Water Network, an association of over 400 environmental groups. The purpose of the annual pier paddle and the Clean Water Day is to focus public attention on the health, pollution and environmental issues threatening the world's biggest natural resource, the ocean.

The Paddle for Clean Water is a noncompetitive, educational, proactive event that is an expression of unity among ocean and beach aficionados who are concerned about the cleanliness of the ocean. There is no charge to participate and everyone is welcome.

The event will feature speeches and discussions on current issues that endanger the ocean and coast. Speakers will include Surfrider Foundation officials, environmental experts and celebrities. On-site voter registration will take place all morning.

Participants are encouraged to show up with surfboards, rafts, kayaks or any other non-motorized devices at 8 am on Saturday, August 16, 1997 at the Ocean Beach Pier in San Diego.
